For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12
Has this verse ever been in your church’s Sunday sermon? Most likely not.
It is kind of heavy, right? Cosmic powers and spiritual forces seem like big deals, it sounds like something beyond you as a person. Guess what, it isn’t beyond you.
You are well equipped as a Christian to “wrestle” again such things, after all 2/3 of you is spiritual.
Whoa whoa whoa… am I going too fast here? Let’s take this nice and easy, this stuff actually isn’t spooky or cray-cray, it is all in the Bible and not very many Christians understand it. So, sit tight and get ready, your mind may get blown.
Spiritual Warfare Bible Study (top 5 at the bottom)
Woven throughout the entire Bible is the supernatural. What is “supernatural”? It is a word that can seem intimidating but simply describes an occurrence that is unexplainable by natural observations.
When Jesus healed blind people, fed 5,000 with just a few loaves and fish, when he walked on water and calmed a storm, those things were supernatural and the Bible is full of awesome moments similar to these ones.
The supernatural happenings of the Bible are one of the main deterrents for people who cannot believe the Bible is true. They are not able to think beyond what their eyes can see. Every Christian will be faced with this decision: do I take God at His word and have faith or do I believe only what I see with my own two eyes?
So, it you believe the former, keep on reading, God has some cool things in store for you. If you believe the latter, you should stop reading my blogs now because I believe this is real AND I’ve seen it, so you are going to think I’m a liar if you walk by your own two eyes.
Let’s look at Ephesians 6:12 again: For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
When I’m dealing with an issue, I often find myself seeing people as the problem. She disappointed me, he forgot again, she is out of control, etc. This is not heavenly perspective.
This verse tells us that the problems we often encounter aren’t based on people or tangible things we can see, they are a result of a battle going on in the spiritual realm.
It makes sense when we consider that 2/3 of a person is metaphysical. You have a mind (or soul), a spirit, and a body. The only physical part of you is your body.
Once we realize that a lot of the junk we deal with on a daily basis stems from things we cannot see, it is easy to feel overwhelmed…until we realize Jesus already won these battles for us.
Jesus won, guys. He won all of our battles. The battle against sin, against the enemy, against the strife inside of us. HE WON.
That is why none of this stuff is beyond us, why? We are no longer deceived.
- we realize a lot of the struggles we experience have a spiritual root
- we pray from the perspective of the finished work of the cross
- we know our victory isn’t based on us, it is based on Jesus
How did Jesus overcome spiritual warfare? With the Holy Spirit. The same Spirit that lives in you now as a Christian. That same power that rose Jesus from the grave lives in you.
Jeremy Camp has a new, powerful song about this. Watch it here.
Whatever battling you are facing (depression, cancer, controlling family), YOU ARE NOT ALONE. The Holy Spirit is the comforter, He is always with you, and He is the power. Jesus fought this battle you are fighting, won it, and then gave you power to live free from it.
You are not alone.

This last segment, #5, is so key. If you find yourself in a battle spiritually, read this every single morning and every single evening. Your most powerful defense is the word of God. Keep reading it, speak it out loud, and say it with conviction.
The enemy is testing you to see if you really believe the God’s word, show Him that you do.
